"...April 3/54 I started with my family for this place and on May 14, while in camp at Salt Creek three miles west of Fort Leavenworth, my wife died of consumption, leaving me with a little girl, Clara Melinda, born Aug 13, 1849 at North Haven.
June 19, started on the plains, June 23 my little girl died. I took sick and had to have a man to drive my team, and arrived here Sept 19 1854 not having been able to do a fair day’s labour for three years..."
