CENTRAL CITY - Clarence Martin Lewis, 98, of Central City, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2012 at NHC Healthcare of Madisonville. His wife of 73 years, Dorothy Lewis, was at his side. Mr. Lewis was born August 15, 1913. He grew up in the Nelson Creek area of Muhlenberg County and graduated from Central City High School. He worked as a mechanic and electrician at the Island Creek Coal Company Crescent Mine for 32 years. He leaves an exemplary legacy as a gentleman of strong Christian faith (former Treasurer and Elder of Central City First Presbyterian Church and member of Central City First United Methodist Church); a dedicated member of the UMWA for 32 years and Secretary-Treasurer of the Island Creek Coal Company Crescent Mine local union; and a strong family man. He was most proud of the fact that all three of his daughters graduated from college and obtained advanced degrees and have been very successful. He was a role model as a husband, father, and grandparent and provided for his family through hard work and strong Christian values. It was always a treat for his grandchildren and great grandchildren to be with their "Pee-paw".

He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, Pearl Howerton Lewis, and his four brothers, William, Robert, Jimmy and J.D. Lewis.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Dorothy Lile Lewis, three daughters: Nancy Harris (Norman) of Statesville, North Carolina; Brenda Lewis of Louisville; and Judith Rhoads (Jerry) of Madisonville; seven grandchildren, Ron Harris (Catherine) of Charlotte, N.C., Sarah Cannon (Jonny) of Raleigh, N.C., Greg Ross of Cave City, Jeannie Driver (Burch) of Taos, N.M., David Ross of Austin, Texas, Bradley Rhoads (Marilyn) of Owensboro, and Christopher Rhoads (Char) of Owensboro, and sixteen great-grandchildren.
