Lost in South Pacific in Oct.

Parents Recieve word Monday Evening from War Department

While fighting with the infantry in the South Pacific. StaffSergeant Clarence Ries, so n of Mr. and Mrs. John A Ries, was killed inaction at the Pelulliu Island in the South Pacifi c. The word wasreceived by telegram from the war department Monday evening. Accordingto th e message Sergeant Ries was killed on Tuesday, October 17. Nofurther word of conditions surr ounding his death was recieved from thegovernment but a letter was promised in the near futur e.

Staff Sergeant Ries was 33 years old at the time of his death. Hebegan his army caree r June 9, 1942 when he became a member of the U. S.Infantry. He left for overseas duty in Ju ne of this year.

Born at New Vienna

He was born at New Vienna September 18, 1911 and spent his earlyyouth assisting his fath er on the farm. He attended St. Boniface schoolat New Vienna.

He is survived by his parents five sisters Mrs. Ray (Dorothy)Bierman, Epworth; Mrs. Clet us (Loretta) Brunsman, New Vienna; Mrs.Francis (Bernice) Gassman, Edgewood; Alma and Ester a t home; fourbrothers Alphonse of Dyersville, Vincent and Herbert of Manchester andArthur at h ome. he was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorial Mass

Memorial services will be held Monday morning at nine o'clock in St.Boniface church of N ew Vienna. The Dyersville Post of the AmericanLegion will attend the services. "
