World War I Veteran
Services for Clarence Spain, a Deep Ellum cobbler for 71 years, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sparkman-Crane Funeral Home in Dallas. Burial will follow at Grove Hill Memorial Park in Dallas.
Mr. Spain died Thursday at Doctors Hospital in Dallas. He was 91.
Mr. Spain retired from the shoe repair business in 1992 when he closed Spain and Son Shoe Store after more than 70 years at the same Deep Ellum location. He and his father started the store at 2642 Elm St. in 1919.
The two men ran the store until 1942 when the elder Spain - William - retired.
When Mr. Spain retired more than two years ago, he told The Dallas Morning News that he loved running his Elm Street shop during the past seven decades.
"I'm ready to retire," he said in 1992. "I hate to leave Deep Ellum because it's a home to me. I've been here for a long time."
Mr. Spain said lack of business and vandalism forced him to retire.
He is survived by two nieces, De Lee Tucker and De Alva Schoolfield, both of Dallas.
