‘Mrs Clarissa Poplett, daughter of Mr & Mrs John Clifton, pioneer resident of Peoria county, died at her home, 112 Selberling Avenue, Peoria Heights, on Saturday, aged 85 years, 2 months and 4 days/
Several years ago the Peoria County Old Settlers’ association accorded her the honor of being the oldest lady in the county, being born her February 4, 1838. She was the widow of the late William Poplett, who, with three children, have preceded her in death.
Her early days were spent on a farm north of Kellar Station, near the old land-mark of Poplett Hollow. Aunt Clarissa, or Grandma, as she was familiarly known to many, was loved by all for her unselfish and noble sacrifices. Wherever sorrow’s cry was heard or wherever sickness laid its threatening hand, there she was found doing her bit for humanity. Her’s was a cheerful disposition, scattering sunshine all along her way.
She leave to mourn her loss seven children, the Misses Annie and Mary Poplett, at home; Mrs Frank Stalman (Stahlman), James and Erb (George Ervin?) Poplett of this city; Wyley Poplett of Guthrie, Ill, and Albert Poplett of Gibson City, one sister, Mrs James Bliss, of Princeville, Illinois, and one brother, Enos Clifton, of Havana, Ill.
Funeral services were held at her late residence Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev. A.R. McLaughlin, pastor of the First Congregational church officiating. Interment was in Mt Hawley cemetery.’
