About Col Alexander Hamilton Redfield

ALEXANDER HAMILTON REDFIELD (born October 24, 1805 in Clifton Springs( Phelps), New York -died in Detroit, November 24, 1869 of consumption [pneumonia]) He studied for three years at Hamilton College; and graduated from Union College in 1829.He practiced law before the New York State Bar in 1831 and presented cases before the Supreme Court. In August 1831, he went to the territory of Michigan and settled in Cass County. In 1832, he laid out, cut, and named the village of Cassopolis; afterwards the county seat. He was one of the only lawyers present at the first court held there in 1832 and became first postmaster in 1837. A democrat, from 1846-1849 he served as State Senator from the Fourth Michigan and later from the First District from 1857-1858. He was also a member of the Board of Regents of the University of Michigan from 1844-1852. In May 1857, he became by order of President James Buchanan , Commissioner of the Indians of the Upper Missouri Agency traveling through vast and distant regions of the head waters of the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers. He made annual visits to all the Indian tribes when the rivers could be navigated. Alexander Hamilton Redfield died at his home in Detroit of pneumonia at the age of 64.

He married Pheobe C. Dean, the daughter of Thomas Dean and Mary Flandreau. He was the son of Peleg Redfield and Mary Judd. He was a descendant of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Sep 15 2019, 4:54:39 UTC
