Col. Alonzo Platt (1815-1862) is most likely the Alonzo Platt of Danbury and Middletown, CT who was granted U.S. Patent #42 on October 8, 1836 for his invention of an oil lamp.
"The painful and unexpected task devolves on us to announce to the public the sudden and untimelydeath of Col.Alonzo Platt, a member in honorable position of the legal profession of Nevada territory.
Less than 10 days since Col Platt then in full health received a slight puncture in the hand by the bite of a dog. Nothing was thought of it at the time. The Colonel pursued his usual avocations and attended the Territorial Supreme Court at Carson after the accident. Yet the wound was more or less troublesome; it inflamed gangrened and symptoms of mortification warned him to seek medical advice He called his physician but too late.
He died Tue May 13 1862 in Virgina City aged 46 years and 8 months.
Col.Platt was born in Danbury, Fairfield, Connecticut, Sep 7 1816.
He was a member of the Wisconsin Legislature in 1844.
He studied law and commenced practice in Woodstock, Illinois, where he held the office of District Attorney. He remained in Illinois until 1850,when he crossed the plains to California. In 1852 he went home, but returned with his family in 1853, and located at Sutter Creek, Calaveras County.
Since then he has resided in Lone Valley, Jackson, Forest City and Downierville, in all of which towns he persued his profession.
He came to Virginia City early in the Fall of 1861.
