According to Field in State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations-A History (1902) Vol 1, p429, Barzillai Richmond was a Captain of a company of militia raised during the French and Indian Wars. The Providence Gazette lists him with the prefix of "Col." in a list of incorporators of the new college in April 1764, later to be known as Brown University. Ancestry.com lists him as a Lieutenant Colonel.
