Col. Edward Hicks

"The Hickses of Newtown were descended from John Hicks, born in England about 1610, and immigrated to Long Island in 1643. His great grandson, Gilbert, born 1720, married Mary Rodman in 1746, and moved to Bensalem in 1747 or 1748. He built a two story brick house at Attleborough in 1767, and moved into it. He was a man of ability and education, and high toned in character, but made the fatal mistake of clinging to the fortunes of Great Britain in 1776. His fine property was confiscated, and he died in exile by the hand of an assassin {or merely a murderer, who robbed him}.

Isaac, son of Gilbert, and the first Newtown Hicks, born in Bensalem in 1748, and died in 1836, married his cousin Catharine, youngest daughter of Edward Hicks, a merchant of New York. Her sister was the wife of Bishop Seabury, Maine, and of her brothers, William studied at the Inner Temple, London, and was afterward Prothonotary of Bucks county, while Edward was an officer of the British army, and died in the West Indies."

1st cousins marry

Mary RODMAN HICKS, "the wife of Gilbert, died August 17, 1769, years before his flight and disgrace. They were the parents of five children:
#Isaac, born April 21, 1748, married his first cousin, Catharine HICKS, daughter of Colonel Edward HICKS and Violetta RICKETTS, of New Jersey.

1. Sarah, born November 3, 1749, died unmarried.
2. Elizabeth, born April 7, 1751, married June 4, 1768, General Augustine WILLET, of Bensalem township.
3. Mary, born January 15, 1753, married May 8, 1772, Samuel KIRKBRIDE.
4. Joseph RODMAN, born November 12, 1756, married July 29, 1777, his cousin, Margaret THOMAS.
