Confederate officer. Captain, Company I, 5th Alabama - April 13, 1861; lieutenant colonel - July 15, 1862; colonel - November 29, 1864; wounded at Chancellorsville and Spotsylvania.

Worked at the Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond after the war. Married Frances Anderson, the daughter of Gen. Joseph Reid Anderson and had 10 children.

Died at his home on West Franklin Street in Richmond.

  • Edwin's birth and death information, and military record, are available in an article in The Birmingham News, Birmingham, Ala., Tuesday, October 13, 1936, page 20. The article noted the following:
    • He was born 13 October 1835 in Greensboro, Alabama.
    • He "enlisted in the Confederate Army and received a lieutenant's commission in the Fifth Alabama Infantry Regiment. By successive promotions he was captain, major, lieutenant colonel and acting brigadier general, in the latter capacity commanding a brigade the last few months of the war...He was wounded at Chancellorsville and Spotsylvania Courthouse.
    • "Nov. 29, 1865, he and Fannie Archer, whose father was a West Point graduate and United States Army officer several years, were married in Richmond, Va.
    • "Mr. Hobson died in Richmond, Va., Nov, 9, 1901, he having made his home here there the last years of his life."
