About Col. Hezekiah Hay Crawford

Notes for HAYS (HEZEKIAH) CRAWFORD: HAYS (HEZEKIAH) CRAWFORD, born 5 January or June 1799, probably Davidson County, Tenn.; died 14 September 1838, Washington County, Ark. and buried in Prairie Grove Cemetery. He married 20 December 1821, Susan Harris, born 20 April 1802 and died 6 July 1877. She was a daughter of the Rev. Samuel Harris, a Presbyterian minister. Note: we believe the son Hezekiah named in chancery petition of John Crawford heirs to be Hays. Hays was known to be a son and dead by that time, and his heirs should have been named in this petition. Hays was a colonel in militia in Tennessee before coming to Arkansas. He and his wife were one of the early settlers of Washington County, Ark. and arrived with four daughters. One daughter recounted that there was not a trace of civilization, not even a trail, on the we stern bank of the Mississippi when they arrived. Hays is shown as one of grand jurors in Washington County in 1835-37.
