John Roddy was the son of Col. James P. Roddye, signer of the Tennessee State Constitution and delegate to the North Carolina Constitutional Convention. John Roddy was the first sheriff of Hamilton County, TN. His wife was Elizabeth Lane. She is buried in another cemetery. John Roddy's son was Dr. Thomas Hale Roddy of Ooltewah, TN, a noted surgeon.
