John THOMPSON, born 1650 [1658] England, died 1701, North Sassafras Parish, Earleville, Cecil County, Maryland, America, was second son (possibly) of Richard THOMPSON, and of his wife, Ann [Anne], born 1650 [1658], England. He emigrated probably by 1679, as a free adult, and resided for most of his life in North Sassafras Parish, Cecil County, Maryland, America.

John THOMSON, 1650-1701 was literate, had clerical skills; possibly attended Middle Temple, 1674. John THOMPSON, 1650-1701, had acquired a series of minor clerkships soon after his arrival. During his lifetime he served as a placeman, was an attorney, who had been admitted to Cecil County Court by 1686, and was a planter in Cecil County, Maryland for the remainder of his life.

John THOMPSON, 1650-1701, married 1677 Judith HERMANN, 1660-1761, daughter of Augustine HERMAN, 1605-1686, and of his wife, Jannettje Marie VERLATH, 1626-1674, of Bohemia Manor, Cecil County, Maryland, America.

"Through his wife he became possessed of many acres that had formerly belonged to his father-in-law, Augustine Herman, Lord of the Manor. Besides these, he had large possessions elsewhere, including a house in New Castle and a farm in New York, which he held in partnership with COLONEL BAYARD. He lived as is supposed, to the advanced age of 109 years, and then died, leaving his eldest son in possession of the property he had inherited from [Augustine] Herman" (Source: Ancient Families of Bohemia Manor, Rev. Charles Payson Mallery, 1888).

John THOMPSON, 1650-1701, served the public in the State Legislature in the Lower House of Cecil County, 1694-1697 (Accounts 1) but died before the second session of the 1701-1704 Assembly.

John THOMPSON served in the Maryland militia, achieving the rank of Captain by 1694; Major between 1695-1697, and later, as a Colonel, 1697-1701.

By the time of his first election to public office, John THOMPSON, 1650 [1658]-1701, had accumulated about 2,000 acres of land of which 1,366 were acquired through his wife's dower. At the time of his death, between December 10, 1701 and March 16, 1701, the total estimated value (TEV) of his estate was £1,304.14.10 (including 9 slaves and books); FB, £1,158.0.4. LAND: ca. 2,300 acres, plus a farm in New York in partnership with a Col. BAYARD. The Will of John THOMPSON, 1650 [1658]-1701 was probated December 10, 1701, in Cecil County.
