In 1685 West represented New Kent in the House of Burgesses. His will dated November 15, 1689, was probated about 1691. It was destroyed in a later destruction of the County records.

Col. John West married Unity, Daugther of Joseph Croshaw, Burgess for York County as listed in most of the 129 Family Search trees.

Note on named West, separate on ydna chart of haplogroup I 3 is Maj. John West. One John West married Judith Armistead and their children are listed in Family Search as: Unity , Charles , Luranna , John Iv , William , Robert , Richard, Agnes Susanna, Livey and Thomas.. This John West had a patent in Glouchester at the same time as Col John West patented in a different location. (See Discussion Tab).

Col John West is different that Maj John West whose mother was the Cockacoeske, Queen of Pamunky, an actual title she received which passed to "Betsy Ann Elizabeth", her neice. FTDNA West Family Project has Maj John West in the I 1 ydna haplogroup and he can not be the son of any of the Wests who have the R ydna.  The dad of Maj John West can not be the Interim Gov of Virginia, in this case; or, one of the Governor's direct sons. 

Do not confuse him with Lt. Col. John West of Accomack.

'John West' was born in 1632, the first child of English parents born on the York River. His ydna is shown to be I 1 and his x mark verified he is the son of Cockakoeoske in the 1677 Middle Plantation Treaty, when he signed with her and was 20 years old at the time he signed the treaty.

He is not the biological child of the R1b ynda John West III - Burgess 1685-6

John West III first married Unity, Daughter of Joseph Croshaw, Burgess for York County. Second, he married Judith Armistead. His children were: Unity , Charles , Luranna , John Iv , William , Robert , Richard, Agnes Susanna, Livey and Thomas according to Family Search.

Served in Militia 1652-1673

The government granted John's father a large tract of land in honor of his birth. He was the son of the Interim governor, Col. John West, of Virginia and the nephew of Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr (Delaware).

West was taken prisoner in Bacon's Rebellion. As to what Bacon's men did to him, it is not recorded. West sat on the court-martial that tried the rebels, and he evened the score with them. He was active on the side of Governor William Berkeley. He later sat on Berkeley's Court Martial at Green Spring Plantation. As Charles II of England said, the Court Martial condemned "more men in that naked country than I did for the murder of my father".
