About Col. Robert Tucker, Jr.
In "The Virginia Gazette" (Williamsburg, Va.), Thursday, August 15, 1771, page 2, column 3: "Married- David Kerr, Esquire, Attorney at Law in King and Queen, to Miss Fanny Tucker, a daughter of the late Colonel Robert Tucker, of Norfolk. No date."
In "The Virginia Gazette" (Williamsburg, Va.), Friday, July 9, 1767, page 3, column 2: "Died- On Wednesday the 1st instant, at Norfolk, Colonel Robert Tucker, merchant."
Robert Tucker was a mariner, burgess for Norfolk County and major slaveholder in Norfolk, son of Robert Tucker from Barbados. His widowed mother married Thomas Nelson, his uncle was Edward Thruston and his brother-in laws were Jacob Walker and Richard Corbin. He was married to Joanna Corbin, and his daughters Martha married Thomas Newton Jr, Sara married John Taylor and Courtney married Preeson Bowdoin. His close associates were his brother John Tucker, John Phrip and Thomas Nelson Sr. Tucker died in 1767 and his estate was widely dispersed by 1770. His son Robert Tucker Jr and widow Joanna inherited only some of his slaves. Tucker ran a mill and bakehouse at Tuckers Point and it was at this site that Lord Dunmore set up camp in May 1776. Robert Tucker Jr lost 25 slaves to the British, as did others who acquired Tucker's property. Many of these runaways appear to have died of small pox. http://www.blackloyalist.info/person/display/2420
