"SAMUEL, Ipswich, s. of the preced. bapt. 1624 at Little Wallingfield, brot. in 1635 by his f. m. Hannah, d. of William Paine of I. had Hannah, wh. m. William Downes of Boston; Judith, wh. m. 1678, Samuel Wolcott of Wethersfield; and Samuel, b. 1654; and by sec. w. m. 8 Dec. 1656, Mary, d. of John Oliver of Newbury, had John, b. 1660; Isaac, 1664; Joanna, wh. m. Nathaniel Whipple; and Oliver, 1676. He was a man of the highest repute in civ. and milit. serv. rep. 1668 and often after to 1681, when he was made Assist. and by ann. elect. cont. in that rank to the time of overthrow of the chart. governm. 1686. In 1675 he had com. of all the Mass. forces on Conn. riv. and late in the season, when succeed. by Major Savage in that quarter, was trans- fer. to the expedit. against Narranganset for the bloody and decisive action of 19 Dec. Resolute in support of the liberty of the people against the unlawf. taxation in 1687, he was imprison. by Andros, and hardly releas. See Hutch. I. 365. In the new Chart. of William and Mary, 1691, he was made one of the council, tho. by the pop. vote left out at the foll. elect. d. 15 May 1696; and his will of 17 Apr. 1695 was pro. 25 May of next yr." age 70 years Frequently a judge for the Essex Co. Quarterly Court.
