About Col. Samuel Blagden of Salisbury CT

Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Blagden

Appointed Major on December 24, 1776 while in the field in Pennsylvania. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel upon the completion of the initial enlistments of men for the 2nd Regiment of Light Dragoons. He served actively until his resignation on August 1, 1779. He had served with Sheldon's Horse since 1775.

Samuel Blagden (Blackden), who had participated in the expedition that captured Ticonderoga in the spring of 1775, served as an aide-de-camp to Gen. David Wooster from September 1775 to December 1776, when he was appointed major of Sheldon’s 2d Continental Light Dragoon Regiment. Blagden was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the regiment with a date of rank of 7 April 1777. A prolonged dispute between Sheldon and his subordinate officers that began in October 1778 prompted Blagden to resign his commission on 1 Aug. 1779
