About Col Samuel Churchill
Samuel and Abigail Churchill has 15 Children, one died at 12 days old in July-1821 and a set of twins died at birth in August-1827. They were the parents of Governor Thomas James Churchill, 13th Governor of the State of Arkansas, 1881 - 1883.
Son of Armistead Churchill, Jr. & Elizabeth Blackwell.
1814-1819: represented Jefferson County in the Kentucky Senate. 1830: elected to the State House of Representatives.

One source states in regards to Churchill Downs...."The track is named for John and Henry Churchill, who leased 80 acres of land to their nephew, Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr. (grandson of explorer William Clark). Clark was president of the Louisville Jockey Club and Driving Park Association, which formed in 1874."
