COL. WM. PRESTON LANE DIES EARLY TODAY AT AGE OF 87
Colonel William Preston Lane, retired banker and distinguished citizen of Hagerstown, died at 3 o'clock this morning following a protracted illness. Death was due to general arterio sclerosis.
He was the son of John Cornelius Lane and Elizabeth (Horine) Lane, and was born in Harmony, Frederick County, November 30, 1851. After the death of his father in 1855, the family moved to Boonsboro, where he attended the public schools prior to completing his education at Edge Hill Academy, Mechanicsburg, Pa, and Princeton University.
Colonel Lane was a distinguished representative of a distinguished family that furnished leaders for the public and commercial activities of Western Maryland for five generations. His grandfather, Seth Lane, who was born in York County, Pa, February 1, 1774, came to Hagerstown shortly after the Revolutionary War and soon achieved a prominent place in business and social life of this city.
Following his graduation from Princeton University, Colonel Lane studied law under the late Henry H Keedy and was admitted to the Bar of Washington County before Judge Richard H Avey. He practiced but a short time, retiring because of his eyes. He then became associated with the Hagerstown Steam Engine Company as manager. Later he served a term as postmaster of Hagerstown by appointment from President Cleveland in 1887, and finally in 1892 became identified with the Bank of Hoffman, Eavey & Co, which later became known as Eavey, Lane & Co. Bank. He was instrumental in organizing the Maryland Surety and Trust Company and served as its first treasurer. Later he became president of the bank, retiring because of his advanced age and ill health in 1932.
Colonel Lane married twice. His first wife, whom he married in 1882, was Miss Amanda Stanhope, a member of a prominent family. She died in 1886 and Colonel Lane remarried on December 4, 1889, his second wife being Virginia Lee Cartwright, of Georgetown, D C, also a member of a prominent family. She died October, 1931.
To this second union six children were born and all survive. They are; Mrs. Virginia Lane Gambrill, of Frederick; John Clarence Lane II, North East, Md; William Preston Lane Jr, this city; Charles Seth Lane III, Frederick; William Cartwright Lane, Frederick; and Samuel Maddox Lane, this city.
Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock at St John's Episcopal Church with Rev Dr Walter Bryon Stehl officiating. Burial will be in the family plot in Rose Hill Cemetery.
