About Col. William Penuel Wood, (CSA)

William "Penn" Wood resided in Randolph County where he enlisted in Company I (Davis Guards), 22nd North Carolina Infantry at the age of 18 on March 1, 1862. He mustered in as Private. He was wounded in the shoulder at the second battle of Manassas, Virginia on August 30, 1862 and was promoted to Corporal prior to October 1, 1862 while on furlough. He returned to duty subsequent to October 31, 1862 and was promoted to Sergeant prior to May 23, 1864. He was captured at or near Jericho Mills, Virginia on May 23, 1864 and confined at Point Lookout yankee prison, Maryland until paroled and transferred to Boulware's Wharf, James River, Virginia where he was received on March 16, 1865 for exchange.
