About Colin Powell, 65th United States Secretary of State

Colin Luther Powell (born April 5, 1937) is an American statesman and a retired four-star general in the United States Army. He was the 65th United States Secretary of State (2001–2005), serving under President George W. Bush. He was the first African American appointed to that position. On December 15, 1993, Colin Powell was made an honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath by Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.

The Coat of Arms of Colin Powell was granted by the Lord Lyon in Edinburgh on February 4, 2004. Technically the grant was to Powell's father (a British subject) to be passed on by descent. Scotland's King of Arms was asked to make the grant as the family of Colin Powell's mother is from Aberdeenshire. Blazoned as:

Azure, two swords in saltire points downwards between four mullets Argent, on a chief of the Second a lion passant Gules. On a wreath of the Liveries is set for Crest the head of an American bald-headed eagle erased Proper. And in an escrol over the same this motto, "DEVOTED TO PUBLIC SERVICE."

The swords and stars refer to the former general's career, as does the crest, which is the badge of the 101st Airborne (which he served as a brigade commander in the mid-1970's). The lion may be an allusion to Scotland. The shield can be shown surrounded by the insignia of an honorary Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (KCB), an award the General received after the first Gulf War.

"Powell's ancestors include two Coote brothers, Richard and Charles, who arrived in Ireland as "soldiers of fortune" in the 1600s during the Plantations.

One of their descendants, General Sir Eyre Coote, became commander in chief of forces in India. He was born in Co Limerick.
His nephew, also called Sir Eyre, served as a general with British forces in American War of Independence. Sir Christopher Coote, who lives between homes in Cork and Wiltshire in England, has the family archives.
They include papers granting freedom to a slave girl called Sally, who was another of General Powell's ancestors.
"While General Sir Eyre Coote was Governor, he had this liaison with one of his slaves," said Sir Christopher.
"He was a happily married man and his only son was born in Jamaica. The slave girl, Sally, was a member of the household staff and I think she was nursemaid to the infant.
"I have in the files the deed which granted her her freedom. 'For faithful services', is the term used. It doesn't specify what they were.
"It is this slave girl, Sally, that Colin Powell claims is his ancestor." However, the archives don't reveal what happened to her or her child after she was freed." * [ OUR PAL POWELL; New US Secretary of State has Irish ancestors].
