Born to a prominent military family, Colonel Morton graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1868. He served in the U.S. Army 5th Artillery and also as an instructor at the academy from 1874 to 1879. He resigned from the Army October 31,1885.
He graduated from Columbia Law School in the same year and started practicing in New York City.
He was one of the early summer residents of Southampton, Long Island and was the founder of the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, a sport for which he was an enthusiast.
On January 21, 1879 he married Mary E. Barber, sister of General Thomas Hunt Barber.
They had two children. A son John Thompson Morton died in 1932, and a daughter Elizabeth lived in New York and survived both her parents dying in 1964.
