Americus MITCHELL was born on December 23, 1870 in Glenville, Russell County, AL. He attended college at Auburn, Alabama and later attended the military academy at West Point where he graduated in 1895. He served in the Spanish-American War but arrived in Cuba after hostilities had ceased. He contracted yellow fever in Santiago and almost died.
He was a Colonel with the 89th and 35th Divisions during World War I and took part in the St. Mihiel and the Meuse Argonne campaigns. He retired and lived in Tuscumbia, Alabama.
He was married to Miriam Milton ATKINSON about December 1910. Miriam Milton ATKINSON was born in Newnan, Cowetta County, GA. Americus MITCHELL and Miriam Milton ATKINSON had the following children:
Americus MITCHELL Jr. was born on November 12, 1916.
Americus MITCHELL and Charlotte JACKSON had the following children: Alethea MITCHELL. Known as Lee, she married Canadian politician and minister Roy Maclaren.
Americus had one additional child, a son, out of wedlock with a maid, possibly Miss Marcella B. Sparks; this sons last known residence was Chicago, IL.
