___

A Patriot of the American Revolution for NEW HAMPSHIRE with the rank of CORPORAL. DAR Ancestor # A028517

Benjamin Comings was born March 28, 1755 in Westford, Massachusetts, and it is presumed, relocated with his father from there to Dunstable in 1757, and likely from there to Cornish in 1773, when his father bought land there not far from the Connecticut river. Benjamin would have been 18 at the time. He married Mary Cooper of Cornish on Sept. 5, 1776, Mary's father having relocated to Cornish from Hardwick in 1769, and then to Croydon, 14 miles away, in 1770. He inlisted [sic] as a Revolutionary War Soldier with Josiah Russel's 2nd company of Rangers on September 24, 1776 and mustered out on October 5, 1776 . It is recorded that he fought at Bennington, and returned home to Cornish. He subsequently "bought land and located in the unbroken forest 21 miles northeast of the Comings mills, built a log house, and set about clearing the land for crops, somewhere between 1778 and 1781. That place, located the south side of Meeting House Hill near the center of the town, is still called the “Comings Place” and occupied by his descendants. A long row of maple trees adorn the roadside." (History of the Town of Cornish p107) Benjamin died April 14, 1813, at 58 years of age, survived by 9 of his 12 children. (See sources for Benjamin and his father for sourcing for above.)

His wife Mary Cooper was a cousin of Roger Sherman. [Wikipedia] Roger Sherman (April 19, 1721 – July 23, 1793) was an early American lawyer and politician, as well as a founding father. He was the only person to sign all four great state papers of the U.S.: the Continental Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution.
