About Colonel Charles Max Carr Lyle
GEDCOM Note
Charles Lyle was born in Leechburg, Pa. After his mother died when he was 14 he went to live with Milner P. Lyle and his wife Alma. He went to Leechburg high school and played football. He is still listed on their team of all time on their web page.Somewhere along the line we know he also boxed whether it was in the Army or before I don't know. We know he worked for a car dealer and then he worked for the Penn. Liquor Control Board for 15 years. He married Mary Adele, last name unknown. In 1941, after Pearl Habor, he enlisted in the Army at age 34. He was quickly promoted. He was stationed in North Africa, we have some old Roman coins that he found there. He was stranded on an island somewhere for a month with nothing to eat but Lobster. He was stationed in France and then in Germany. He was in the Quartermaster corps who were in charge of supplies. He met Johanna Hildegard Meissner while in Germany. She was with a group of German women and children who were in some kind of camp. He remained in Germany after the war. In 1950 they were married. Charles was sent to France when Eisenhower came there and set up his base of operations. By then he was a Major in the Army. They returned to the US in 1952 and lived in New York City. In 1954 he was transferred to Pennsylvania, and lived in Secane, Pa. They bought a house in Ridley Twp Pa in 1955. In 1955 Charles was transferred to Taipei, Taiwan and the island of Formosa. They lived there for about 2 years and then returned to the US. He was then sent to Memphis Tenn where he lived until he retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1962. After retirement Charles worked for the Civil Service as a Defense Contract Administrator in Reading Pa, until his retirement in 1977. He died of cancer of the pancreas July 1977. In remembering Charles I think that his outstanding feature was a very deep intelligence. He was an extremely smart man and a nice one too.
