About Commander J. Johnson

Commander Johnson was the son of Benjamin and Ada Floyd Johnson. He was hanged for killing Rev. Harmon Grainger over a timber deal gone wrong and some have noted that the Reverend was going to sue Commander for living out of wedlock with Charlotte Simmons. Reputedly convicted with only circumstantial evidence. An appeal was filed with the SC Supreme Court. The conviction was upheld as was an appeal to the Governor for clemency. The Supreme Court Case is noted in "sources" tab. One of the sources mentions that someone confessed to the murder after the hanging, but no notice of who can be found. I know that growing up in area and being doubling connected to the family that even after 75 years, close family members were adamant that Commander was innocent. That seems debatable, even today.
