About Conrad Aszmann
Family lore purports he was a baker for Kaiser Wilhelm I, but hated the regimentation of the military and left Germany and came to the USA. Ironically, he ended up a soldier in the American Civil War (108th Regiment of the Ohio Infantry, Union Ohio Volunteers). He apparently was wounded in Tennessee, met his future wife Alberna or Bertha Benegar in Knoxville and married her there. They returned to Cincinnati and had four children.
It might NOT be lore. The 1880 census lists his occupation as "baker". And, with a note that he "can't work sometimes on acc of wounds received in war"...and it lists his wife's birth state as Tennessee. She is listed on the census as "Berta" Three children were listed on the 1880 census...Emma 13, Albert 11 and Fred 9.
