"Funeral services were held at Cora Hofer on Aug. 26, 1998. Cora and her late husband, Edward, were long-time owner/operators of The Lennox Independent.

Cora (Ulberg) Hofer was born on a farm east of Lennox, SD on Jun. 19, 1900, the daughter of Ole and Mary (Hilman) Ulberg. She attended rural school and grew to womanhood here. She was employed as a clerk in several stores in Lennox.

On Feb. 12, 1922 Cora was united in marriage to Edward Hofer in Lennox.

Immediately following their marriage they lived in Canton. In May of 1924 they moved to Davis where they owned and operated the Davis Eagle for over four years. On Sep. 13, 1928 a tornado destroyed their home and newspaper plant. They then moved to Lennox and purchased The Lennox Independent, which they owned and operated for over 60 years. Her husband preceded her in death on Nov. 19, 1993, ending a marriage partnership of over 71 years. Cora continued to make her home in Lennox since that time.

Besides her parents and her husband she was preceded in death by her daughter, Vivian Renz on Jan. 16, 1993; five brothers: one who died in infancy, Albert, John, Clarence and Melvin Ulberg; two sisters: Rosie Musch and Mabel Schneiderman, who recently died May 28, 1998. She was the last surviving member of the Ole and Mary Ulberg family.

Having been in declining health, Cora died early Sunday morning, Aug. 23, 1998 at Hilda's Heritage Home in Lennox where she had been a resident since Dec. 1, 1993. She attained the age of 98 years, two months and four days.

Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Verlyn Hofer and his wife, Mary of Lennox; her son-in-law, Carl Renz of Lennox; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law; Edith Ulberg of Lennox; one brother-in-law: Jacob Hofer of Huron."
