Cornelius Hatfield / Hetfield was born and died in what used to be called Elizabethtown, in Essex County, New Jersey. Today this area is known as Elizabeth and is in Union County.

Children of Cornelius and Abigail. Ann and Joanna were twins.

Cornelius married a second time to Elizabeth the daughter of his cousin Matthias, she was a widow of Benjamin Williams.

Cornelius was very prominent in the slave trade. Here are several newspapers.

New York Gazette and Weekly Post Boy - April 27, 1752. "A likely Parcel of Negro Boys and Girls from 12-20 years of age, who have all had the Small Pox, To be sold by Cornelius Hetfield in Elizabeth Town."

"To be sold very reasonable by Cornelius Hetfield at Elizabeth Town, East Jersey, a Parcel of healthy Negro men and women between 14-22 years of age.
