Enlisted as Private in Co. C, 102nd OVI, on 11 August 1862 at the age of 29. Appointed Corporal on 30 April 1864. Captured in action at Athens, AL, on 24 September 1864 by rebel troops under the command of CSA Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. Exchanged on 22 April 1865 and survived the explosion and sinking of the steamer "Sultana" on 27 April 1865. Returned to Company on 16 June 1865. Mustered Out on 30 June 1865 at Nashville, TN.
