

Son of John Maxwell and Mahala Weddle Maxwell.
Union Army solider. Served in Company B, 50th Regiment Indiana. Was captured, and later succumbed to disease at Camp Ford, Tyler, Texas. His grave has never been located.
The 1850 Census of Jackson Co., Indiana, Salt Creek twnshp, pgs 122 & 123, dated 3 Sept 1850 lists James J. as being 13 years old at the time of the census. His birthplace was listed as Indiana.
The 1860 census of Jackson Co. Indiana, Carr twnshp, pg 477, dated 12 July 1860 lists a "Jefferson Maxwell" living with E.W. and Sarah Maxwell. Jefferson was listed as being 23 years old at the time of the census. This would put his birthyear at 1837, the same as James J.. It is assumed that this person is one in the same. The census lists the value of Jefferson's personal property at $180.
The Index of Civil War veterans (Union Army) at the Regional Branch of the National Archives in Laguna Niguel CA lists James J. as having served in the 50th Indiana Infantry Co B, d (or A). He is listed as Pvt/Corp.
The Civil War muster record obtained from the Indiana State Archives indicate that James J enrolled in the 50th Indiana Infantry Co B on 1 September 1861 at Medora Indiana. His enrollment time was 3 years. He was mustered on 31 December 1861 at Camp Morton KY. He is listed as being 24 years old at the time. His eyes were listed as hazel, his hair black, his height as 6'2" and his complexion as dark. His nativity was listed as Jackson Co Indiana, his occcupation as farmer. He was transferred to the 50th Res. Bn (batallion?) as a corporal. A note at the bottom of the muster record reads "Veteran Male(?) 2/64".
A subsequent muster record indicates that Jas J was a corporal in the 50th regiment Co A. His eyes were listed as blue, hair black, height as 6"2", his complexion as dark. His nativity was listed as Jackson Co Indiana, and his occupation as farmer. It is listed that he "Died in the hands of the enemy November 5th 1864".
