Obituary:
No motive for the suicide Saturday night of Corwin Essen, 24 a man with a family and with a job, had learned today by W.H. Davis county coroner, after a week-end of investigation into Essen's death.
Essen spiked a bottle of beer shortly after 9 O'clock Saturday evening with powdered strychnine at the Capitol news shop, 218 East main St. He thereupon entered the Capitol Theater where he was discovered about 10 O'clock in death agony in one of the seats. C.C. Dunsmoor, the theater proprietor, heard Essen moaning in the front part of the auditorium. He took the victim down into the smoking room of the building, placed him on a davenport and called a doctor and an ambulance.
Essen was taken to the Deaconess hospital where he was pronounced dead by the physician at 10:29. No reason for his actions was given by the widow, nor by his associates at the Marshalltown trowel Works, where he was employed. The Essen family lives at 605 Marion Street. Corwin Essen was born Oct. 3, 1907 in Marshall co. and had lived here all his life. He had lived in Marshalltown since he was 5 years old. He was the son of Henry and Lilly (Thompson) Essen. On Aug. 21, 1923 he married Opal Rash a Marshalltown girl.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two children, Howard, 7, and Marie 5. He had been employed at the Marshalltown Trowel Works for the last six years. He is also survived by his father Henry Essen, of this city, and a sister Mrs. Charles Prescott of Grundy center, Iowa. He was preceded by his mother Lilly Essen.
The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon from the Persel Funeral Home, with the Rev. C. G. Zeigler in charge of the services. Burial in the Riverside Cemetery.
