About Cpl. (USA) James Wherry Huntsman

James Wherry Huntsman was born on his parents farm. When 24 years old he commenced the harness trade in Woodbury and worked at it for six years; at the end of this time he returned to the farm and has given his attention since. He now owns the north half of the northeast quarter of Section 22 on which he resides, and the land in another part of the township. (from 1908 History of Richland Co., Ohio by Baughman, pp 569-571).

Baker. d/o Peter and Christiana Wilhelm Baker;born 28 Mar 1832 in Baltimore, Frederick, Maryland; she died 25 Mar 1883 of dropsy in Darlington, Richland Co., Ohio. She was buried in the Lutheran Cemetery, North Woodbury, Morrow County, Ohio. James and Catharine had 3 children: Warren Alden Huntsman born 5 Apr 1860, Lyndon H. Huntsman 2 Feb 1868 and Charles A. Huntsman born 3 Oct 1874 (all born Darlington, Richland, Ohio. James married (2) 2 Jan 1884 in Richland Co., Ohio Amanda M. Amos born 18 Nov 1844 in Darlington, Richland Co., Ohio; died 1927 in Ohio; buried Shauck Cemetery, Johnsville, Morrow Co., Ohio; daughter of Fredrick and Margaret Shaffer Amos. Her father came to Ohio in 1835. James and Amanda had 3 children: Myrtle E. Huntsman 27 Oct 1884, Caroline S. (known as Louie C.) Huntsman 13 Jan 1886, John Wellie Huntsman 20 Feb 1888 all born Darlington, Richland, Ohio.

James enrolled as a Corporal (Union) in Company B, 163rd Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry on 2 May 1864 for 100 days at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio. He was age 44 at the time of enrollment. He was Mustered out with the Company 10 September 1864 at Camp Chase by order of War Department.
