Buried: originally in Helena, Arkansas, and later relocated to Memphis National Cemetery
Married Cynthia Ellen Beeson on 30 Dec 1855, in Wayne County, Indiana
Children: Sarah Jane Tate and Oliver Franklin Tate
Son of: James Milton Tate (Abt 1796-Abt 1836) and Martha Arrel (1806-1888).
John Tate and Cynthia E. Beeson applied for their license at Richmond, Wayne Co., Indiana. They were married on December 30, 1855 by Lewis Bales, Justice of Peace.
John Tate enrolled in service as a Private on September 25, 1861 at Anderson, Indiana in Co A, 47th Regiment and mustered into service November 2, 1861 at Indianapolis, Indiana. John was a Corporal in Co. A. 47th Reg. Indiana Volunteers when he went up the White River in February contracting a cold and got pleurisy and then pneumonia and died in Helena, Arkansas on March 5, 1863. In October 2000 my son, Ron and I (Dolly Flinn) went to Helena, Arkansas to see if we could find where he was buried. When we got there they told us he would not be buried in the Confederate Cemeteries. He had been shipped to the National Cemetery at Memphis. We went to the Memphis National Cemetery and found his stone with his name on it. He was buried in the Indiana section.
I have a handwritten letter from John's brother, Lemuel Augusta Tate to John's wife, Cynthia, on 5 Feb 1863 telling of John's death in Helena. (Kirk Beaty)
