About Cpl. (USA) William Joseph Newman

William Joseph Newman (a.k.a. Wm H Newman) was born on 15 Jan 1836 in Deposit, Delaware Co, NY, the youngest of three sons born to the marriage of Alanson Benjamin Newman and Abigail Berilba Hulce.

His mother died on 13 May 1838, when William was just over two years old. His father remarried circa 1843 to Miss Eunice Whitaker and in the 1850 Federal Census William was living with his maternal grandparents Samuel H & Sally (Plummer) Hulce in Deposit. It is not certain where his two older brothers, Samuel Hulce Newman (1829-1906) and Arthur David Newman (1831-1864) resided after the death of their mother.

William was baptized in Nov 1849 at the First Baptist Church of Deposit, NY.

William served his country during the War of the Rebellion (Civil War), enlisting on 16 Aug 1861 as a Private in Co A, 56th NY Vol Infantry at Newburgh, Orange Co, NY.

On 29 Feb 1864, he was discharged at Beaufort, Beaufort Co, SC and he immediately reenlisted and was promoted to Corporal.

He fought bravely in many battles, such as Bottom's Bridge, Seven Pines and John's Island in South Carolina. It was after the battle of John's Island that William took ill and quickly worsened. He died on 13 Jul 1864 in Beaufort, Beaufort Co, SC of brain fever. He was aged 28 Years 5 Months 29 Days.

William died without knowing that exactly three weeks earlier on 23 Jun 1864, his brother, Pvt Arthur David Newman of Co A, 49th NY Volunteer Infantry, succumbed at U.S. Army General Hospital-Summit House, Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co, PA, from his wounds received at the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia.
