About Cyrus B Geary

Cyrus B. Geary, 36 years old, well-known public school teacher of Bullskin township, died this morning at the home of his parents. Mr. And Mrs. C. F. Geary, near Geary School. Death, was caused by blood poisoning resulting from an abscess. Never robust in health;, all his life a cripple. Mr. Geary fought valiantly for six weeks against the inroads of the poison before succumbing. He was regarded as one of the best rural teacher in the county.

Ever since he entered the profession, which he followed 17 years, Mr. Geary had been engaged at teaching in the Bullskin Township. He was compelled to retire before the end of his term, in April 1923. At that time he was at Breakneck. He taught at Pleasant Valley for several terms. Most of his teaching career was at his home school, Geary. He was a normal school graduate and was regarded as especially well read. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren at Buchanan.

Besides his parents he is survived by the following brothers and sisters: William G. at Freed: Harry, Snydertown; Charles, Brownsville; George, Point Marion; Mrs. Irvin Anderson, Scottdale; Mrs. Walter Butt, Breakneck.

The funeral service will be at the home Saturday at 2 o’clock. Burial will be in Knopsnyder Cemetery.

On the subject of Cyrus--Mom and Aunt Helen always referred to him as Uncle Cy. They always talked very fondly of him and what a nice man he was. He taught both of them when they were in school at Breakneck. However, I do not recall that they ever said that he was in a wheelchair but that he used crutches and that he was crippled. I recall Mom (or perhaps it was Aunt Helen) saying that when he died the entire school walked from Breakneck to the church for his funeral. This was some distance and I was amazed that they would take a bunch of kids that far. Donna
