Cyrus Edson (185-91) graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University in 1881, and joined the staff of the City Health Department, eventually becoming Commissioner of Health. He served for three terms as President of the Board of Pharmacy of the City and County of New York. He was surgeon, and a Lieutenant Colonel in the New York State National Guard. He was vice-president of the American Society of Public Analysts. He was Commissioner of Health of New York Stat when Theodore Roosevelt was Governor. He published many articles and brochures on health subjects and invented many surgical instruments and methods. He was highly esteemed for his indefatigable opposition to the adulteration of food, drugs and drink. He discovered ASEPTOLIN, a "cure" for consumption (tuberculosis).
