Moved to Missouri in 1895 with his parents and siblings. First settled in Holden, Missouri and later in Centerview, Missouri.

Cy, as he was often called, grew to young manhood in Houts-Chapel neighborhood. He was a lover of animals, especially dogs and horses. Cy could imitate most of the birds, in the near by wooded section of this beautiful Post-Oak Valley farmland. No mockingbird could out trill Cy Reed. "Winkie Cy Percy Wiggle Tail Grasshopper Reed" as he was often spoken of by the family that was to be his In-Laws. He was employeed by the Missouri-Pacific Railroad.
