Started the Eastern Boot Manufacturing works in Grahamstown, South Africa, near the Cathedral, church square stayed in Hodges Street sold out in 1876 to Philip Jones & treked up to Somerset East. James pioneered to Rhodesia several times firstly in 1894 dec..With his wife Eliza & son Jack [johnny get your gun Carruthers] together with the Bottons, Stuttaford & Sparrow familys which joined later.

FHL FILM No.1067965 & 1851 Census Routes taken to Rhodesia, Transvall via Tuli/Maxebba drift may be the same as the suggested Carruthers crossing?, Limpopo river, skirting the Matopos through Mangwe pass.

James came to South Africa on the ship Coldstream 15/16-7-1861 from the port of Southampton. Arrived port elizabeth 3-8-1861. He lived in Bulawayo from 1894-1906. then returned to Somerset East Cape Province.

Died at age 81, before his death travelled back to Scotland in 1903 for a visit. James's children are registered in the Presbyterian parish Grahamstown 1848-1893..........Married 4-9-1863
