About Damas Arcand

Damas was born at the mission of the Oblate fathers near Duck Lake Saskatchwan.

When he was 3 years old the family moved to the Mattes/Debden area. He never had the opportunity to attend school, but somehow became a math whiz. He spoke 3 languages, French, Cree and English, sometimes using all 3 in one sentence! He loved to play cards and checkers, He had a very good sense of humor, enjoyed family gatherings, New Year's day being the most important celebration of the year.

In 1938 he married Bella Vandal (twice, once in the Anglican church and once by a Catholic priest). They raised a family of 9 children north of Debden. They earned their lining farming, logging, threshing, making big gardens, hunting and trapping.

They always made time for fun, music and dancing.

They survived a lot of hard times over the year including the devastating loss of 2 sons, an infant son in 1953 and their son Bruno aged 28 in 1970.

Whenever a problem arose he never panicked-just carefully thought things out.

He loved music, playing fiddle and jigging. He won the Red River jigging competition at the Fiddle Fest in the year 2000 at the age of 84.

He was hospitalized on Sept 22, 2009 close to midnight, at 9:30 the following morning the nurse reported "he assured her he was not in any pain, thanked her for taking such good care of him, then just closed his eyes and was gone."
