About Daniel B Baker

Son of Malcolm Baker and Flora Ann Buie. Daniel and his wife, Flora, were members of the Presbyterian Church all of their lives, and farmed for a living. It is believed that his second name was "Buie", after his mother's family.

In the spring of 1872 (from Daniel M. Baker’s Civil War Pension Application), after the American Civil War, Daniel (at the age of 65), Flora, and family finally moved to McNairy County, Tennessee in order to join Daniel’s brothers, Duncan, Malcolm and Archibald, who were already in McNairy County. The American Civil War, due to economic hardships as well as the loss of all of his male children, save two, had ruined Daniel, and he never fully recovered financially or physically from the effects of the war. Three of Daniel and Flora’s sons were killed in the war, and they also lost a daughter during the same time period. Daniel B. Baker is said to have migrated to McNairy County, Tennessee hoping to regain his fortune, but failed in the attempt.
Daniel is, in fact, first listed in the McNairy County tax records (District 6) in 1872, but is listed as actually owning no land, so he was not taxed that year. I have been unable to read his 1873 record for District 6, and have not found him listed at all in any year after that.
Daniel eventually died of cancer on August 21, 1885, and is buried in Falcon Cemetery in McNairy County, Tennessee. His son, Daniel M. Baker, is known to have often said that his father died a young man, as he was only about 80 years of age when he died.
The children of Daniel B. and Flora Ann Campbell-Baker were Mary Elizabeth (July 10, 1835-July 31, 1867), William James (August 27, 1837-July 1, 1862), Flora Ann (October 26, 1839-December 11, 1907), John Calvin (January 31, 1842-October 11, 1863), Henry Clay (February 7, 1844-December 23, 1862), Daniel Malcolm (September 5, 1846-February 21, 1943), Margaret Jennet “Jennie” (September 28, 1848-January 12, 1918) and Peter McDonald (March 10, 1852-May 2, 1916).
