Services set for Daniel B. Beard
Funeral services for Daniel B. Beard of Santa Fe, former Southwestern Regional Director of the National Park Service, are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church.
Beard, 71, died Saturday night from injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident at Las Vegas Highway and Zia Road.
Beard, the son of famous conservationist Daniel Carter Beard, who started the Boy Scout movement in the United States, served as Southwest Regional Director of the National Park Service from 1963 until his retirement in 1967.
Beard has also pioneered the planning and development of the Everglades National Park and became the first superintendent there in 1947.
Beard also served as superintendent at Olympic National Park, Washington, as chief of interpretation for the National Park Service, and assistant director of the park service in charge of public affairs.
Beard was given a Superior Accomplishment Award for his work at the Everglades and later in his career he received a Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Department of Interior.

Beard, Daniel Bartlett, 70 - Former regional director of the Southwest Region of the National Park Service, passed away last Saturday from injuries received in an automobile accident. Mr. Beard is survived by
- his wife Betty of the home,
- two sons
- Daniel Carter Beard and wife Barbara of Bristow, Virginia; and
- Albert LeMessurier Beard and wife Patricia of Phoenix, Arizona;
- a sister, Mrs. Barbara Beard Harper of Stanhope, New Jersey, and
- six grandchildren.
Visiting hours today from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Berardinelli Mortuary. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. James D. Brown, Dr. Robert Bodshen, and the Fr. John Flynn officiating.
Mr. Beard was a veteran of WWII, having served in the US Army.
Interment will follow services in National Cemetery with Full Military Honors at graveside. Arrangements through Berardinelli Mortuary.

Daniel B. Beard
Funeral for Daniel B. Beard, 71, former superintendent of Olympic National Park, was conducted at 2 p.m. today at the First Presbyterian Church in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Mr. Beard was killed Saturday in an automobile accident in Santa Fe. He resided at 140 Zia Road, Santa Fe. His wife, Betty, survives at the family home.
He was superintendent of Olympic National Park from June 1958 to September 1960, when he left to become assistant director of interpretation at National Park Service headquarters in Washington, D.C. Later he served as regional director at Santa Fe, where he retired.
Son of the founder of the Boy Scouts of America, he was reared in New York City. He started with the National Park Service as a biologist and later became the first superintendent of the Everglades National Park in Florida.
While serving at Olympic National Park, he headed the beach hike with United States Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas from Lake Ozette to LaPush. The hike, which included a number of conservationists in the area, was a protest against the proposal to build a road along the beach. He supervised the initial work in the park under the Mission 66 Plan.
