About Daniel Bliss, Jr.

Patriot: Deacon Daniel Bliss, Jr. (#515) is associated with Rehoboth and Leyden, Massachusetts. Born in 1726, the son of Daniel Bliss and Dorothy Fuller, Daniel was the father of eleven children, five of whom died in October 1774 of smallpox. He enlisted in Captain Gideon Burt's Co., Colonel David Leonard's Regiment, Massachusetts Line on March 2, 1777. Part of his service included marching to help reinforce the Northern army at Ticonderoga. Daniel was discharged April 10, 1777 for service of one month, ten days. He is listed in the DAR’s Patriot Index, Centennial Edition, page 283.

Daniel was buried in the Farm Cemetery, in South Leyden (on Greenfield Road), Leyden, Franklin County Massachusetts (per Bliss Genealogy). Note: It is now known as South Leyden Cemetery, in Leyden, Franklin County Mass. --- Note: Michael Frees, of Leyden, Mass. tells us that he has found the burial location of Daniel Bliss, buried near his son Allen, in a small plot, on what is now private land, in Leyden, Mass. Thank you Michael! -------------------------- Father: Daniel Bliss Sr. b: 21 Jan 1702, in Rehoboth, Bristol County Massachusetts. Mother: Dorothy Fuller. b: 12 Jul 1706, in Rehoboth, Bristol County Massachusetts.

On May 9, 1773, Deacon Bliss and several others were appointed on a committee to build a new meeting house (church) at Rehoboth, Massachusetts.

In 1777 Daniel Bliss Jr. enlisted in Capt. Gideon Burt's Company, Col. David Leonard's Massachusetts Regiment, during the Revolutionary War.

Married: Sarah Allen, on 16 Nov. 1752, in Warren, Rhode Island. Sarah was born 2 Jun. 1734, in Warwick, Rhode Island. Daniel Jr. and Sarah had 12 children.

Note: The following article was published in the "Providence (Rhode Island) Gazette" on Nov. 5, 1774: "Daniel Bliss of Rehoboth, has lately buried five of his children: Daniel age 22, Hezekiah age 20, Sarah age 15, son Comfort age 15 [or 11], and youngest daughter [Esther] 16 [or 14] months. All died very near together." --- The 12 children of Daniel Jr. and Sarah are: (Five of whom died within a month of one another. All five died in Oct. of 1774). --- 1.
