JUDGE COATE DIES

He was Justice of the Peace for several terms.

Daniel Augustus Coate, age 75 years, died last evening at 8:30 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. H. Cottey, 2125 Broadway. Judge Coate had been in a serious condition for the last four months and had been confined to his bed for five weeks. The extreme hot weather weakened his vitality and notwithstanding his strong constitution the end came last night. He was well known throughout the entire county and universally admired and respected by everyone with whom he came in contact. He served faithfully as justice of the peace at Oswego and for several terms in Parsons. No person who came before him ever had cause to complain of unfairness or injustice for he dealt strict justice impartially but with a firm hand, and was always willing to give kind advice and counsel.

Mr. Coate was married to Alice E. Bratt, who died in 1913, and some years later he married Ida Robertson, who died shortly more than a year ago. He is survived by nine children, Lewis E. Coate of El Monte, Calif.; Ralph A. Coate, H. A. Coate and Walter A. Coate, all of Portland, Ore.; Mrs. Iellie [sic] A. McCosh of Chicago, Mrs. Mabel Sweatte of Pawhuska, Okla., and Mrs. Jessie A. Cottey and Mrs. Eva A. Doran of Parsons, and Mrs. Hazel A. Headlee of Orange, Calif. He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Cynthia Stallings of Oswego, Mrs. Esther Rose of Orange, Calif., and Mrs. Ollie Hart of Enid, Okla.

Judge Coate was a member of the Washington Avenue Methodist church, of the A. O. U. W., and of the A. F. and A. M. of Oswego. Definite funeral arrangements cannot be announced at this time but the service will probably be held Sunday afternoon from the chapel of Ellis and Martin, conducted by Rev. W. O. Mulvaney, and interment in Oswego cemetery. Friends may call at the Ellis and Martin chapel at any hour until the itme [sic] of the funeral service.
