US Congressman, Judge. A native of Ohio, he graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, in 1860, and was admitted to the bar soon after. He practiced law beginning in 1861, and was named the District Attorney for New Castle, Indiana, in 1862. At the outbreak of the Civil War he served in the Union Army with the Ninth Indiana Calvary and was promoted to the rank of regimental major. He was later promoted to the rank of major, then captain, and then as an acting assistant general in the military division of the State of Mississippi. After the war, he moved to Richmond, Indiana, where he was named City Attorney in 1866, and later as the Prosecuting Attorney of the Wayne County Circuit Court from 1872 to 1874. He was a Member of the Indiana State Senate from 1879 to 1881. After his time in the senate he resumed his law practice, and then served two terms as a State Court Judge from 1885 to 1896, and 1896 to 1911. On March 4, 1917, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-fifth Congress, but only served two months before he died in office in Washington, D.C., on May 19, 1917.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Oct 11 2021, 18:46:54 UTC
