Harris, honorary commander of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States, was born in London, England, in 1846. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the Union forces as a sailor. Giving his name as George Irving, and his age as 21, he served on the sloop-of-war Saratoga, which was part of the fleet blockading Georgia.
Harris ... was one of the last living persons to have met President Lincoln. Following his enlistment, he was sent to Washington where, with a group of 30 other volunteer sailors from New York, he was welcomed by the Civil War President.
