Research Notes

The town of Dartmouth, until 1787, comprised what is now the City of New Bedford, and the towns of Dartmouth, Westport, Fairhaven, and Acushnet. The staunch pioneer Howland's contributed toward laying a good social, political, and religious foundation in the area. The family's influence was so large that this locality was called the "Mecca of the Howland's". (https://archive.org/details/briefgenealogica00howl/page/49/mode/1up...)
