About Daniel J. O'Brien

Family of Daniel J. O’Brien & Mary M. Williams

May 1927 – September 1950

Written by Daniel J. O’Brien, Jr.

May 1927 – Marriage of Mary Margaret Williams (b. April 6, 1907, age 20) and Daniel Joseph O’Brien (b. November 4, 1888, age 38), in Coventry, RI, witnessed by her sister, Anne Bell Williams (b. May 17, 1911, age 16). At this time, our father, Daniel is working as a salesman with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.

June 26, 1928 – Birth of Daniel Joseph O’Brien, Jr. at family home on Route 12 in Lisbon, CT, located across from St. Mary’s Cemetery, attended by the family doctor, Harold Higgins, MD.

May 8, 1929 – Birth of Walter Williams O’Brien, also at the family home on Route 12 in Lisbon, CT, and attended by the same family doctor, Harold Higgins, MD. Walter was named after our maternal grandfather’s brother, Walter Williams, who was living in California. A photograph of “great uncle” Walter Williams appears in the family photo albums found on geni.com.

1929 to 1933 – Following Walter’s birth, our family moved to Palmer Road / Burton Road, in Griswold, CT, living in a farmhouse on the corner, next door to George and Lucy Palmer, but remaining there for fewer than twelve months, before moving to a house in the New Britain / Kensington, CT area for a short time. Loosing his job at Metropolitan Life, our father took a sales position with National Biscuit Company, moving to a house near the beach in Milford, CT. Located at a distance of 200 to 300 yards to the north of the house at the top of a hill was a church. At the end of the street, we could access the beach between two buildings located approximately 200 to 300 yards south from our house. On the way to the beach, we crossed trolley tracks that ran parallel to the beach and perpendicular to the street on which our house was located. This remained our home through Christmas of 1932 and into the summer of 1933, when Dad was transferred to the Springfield, MA office of National Biscuit Company and we moved to Greenfield, MA, renting the house at 64 Cleveland Street, across from Shattuck Park. Mrs. Stacey, an elderly lady, owned the house next door, and next to her lived Mr. O’Connell, who was to become the chief of police of Greenfield in the mid-1930’s.

January 31, 1932 – Sister Anne was born in Jewett City, CT, at the home of Ethyl and Kelly Gray, on Aspinook Street, just prior to our family moving to Milford, CT. Ethyl was a niece of my maternal grandmother, Amy Dawley. Grandma Amy’s brother “Tide” was Ethyl’s father, Arvine Dawley. One day, while living in Milford, Aunt Annie, our mother’s sister, came to visit driving Grandpa’s 1928 Dodge milk truck, accompanied by Neil O’Brien, our half-brother, the one of our father with Elsie, his first wife, and our uncle Johnny, our mother’s brother.

July 26, 1933 – Sister Amy Elizabeth is born on The Farm in Griswold, owned by our maternal grandparents, John D. Williams and Amy (Dawley) Williams. The Farm was formerly the Brown Farm, located on the Preston / Jewett City Road, route 164 connecting with route 138. Soon thereafter, the family relocated to Greenfield, MA.

September 1933 – Brother Danny began kindergarten at the old (original) Four Corners School (Grades K-6) located just north of the Silver Street / Federal Street intersection, leading to Bernardston on routes 5 and 10, to Hartford, CT to the south and Brattleboro, VT to the north. On the first day of school, Ma and Danny walked to school with Herbie Blum and his mother, a distance of about one mile. Four Corner’s School was a two-story brick building very old at the time. Danny’s kindergarten teacher was Mr. Kennedy, probably in her forties, with graying hair. Near the main school building was a one-room portable building housing the third grade.

September 1934 – I had turned six years old this past June and was not entering first grade, while brother Walter was just beginning kindergarten.
