About Daniel I Mansfield

Deacon, husbandman

Ref: The Mansfield Genealogy: Descendants of Robert and Elizabeth Mansfield who came to Lynn, 1639-1640, compiled by Geneva A. Daland and James S. Mansfield, 1980, quoted by cousin Nancy B. Edmands Allen.

The Mansfield saltbox house was built by the underwriters of the Iron Works Company for Mr. Leader, the director between 1643 and 1646. Much of the building material was brought from England. Daniel bought an acre of land with house, fulling mill, and buildings at Hammersmith (Saugus).

Daniel became owner of the homestead and lands of his father, Andrew Mansfield, by settling with the other heirs. He was a man of prominence and was Deacon of the First Church and was called Husbandman.

In his will, made 6 June 1728, and proved 29 July 1728, he gave his wife Margaret "his negro woman, Phyllis." At the date of his will, his son Samuel and his daughter Bethiah Poole were deceased, and Bethiah Poole's daughter was under age. Sons Daniel and Andrew were to have the residue of his estate and be executors.
