About Daniel M Rash

Daniel accompanied one of his brothers to Canon City Colorado who had moved there hoping to cure his Tuberculosis. Daniel met Alice there and they married, then returned to a farm near Union Iowa. Daniel was fatally injured while felling a tree in 1921

Union Star, Union, Hardin County, Iowa, Jan. 5, 1921:
FARMER LIVING NEAR KILLED WHILE
FELLING TREE TUESDAY FORENOON
NECK WAS BROKEN BY BLOW
D.M. Rash, a farmer, living about four miles southwest of Union, was almost instantly killed just before noon Tuesday when a tree which he and his son, Glenn, were cutting down, unexpectedly split off and in falling swerved suddenly to one side striking Mr. Rash on the right shoulder with such force that his neck was broken. The tree also caught him across the thighs so that it was necessary for his son to summon aid to get his father out from under the tree. Word was also sent into town to his brother, Frank Rash, and family, who secured an auto and accompanied by the three children, who were attending school in Union, left at once for the farm house. Meanwhile the news spread rapidly thru out the community.
Dan, as he was usually known, lived on the old home place southwest of town, and was well known thru this locality, having taken an active part in the I.O.O.F. Lodge activities and in other affairs. He is survived by his wife and five children: Miss Inez who is a junior in Penn College at Oskaloosa; Glenn who is an alumni of the Union High School; Ruth a member of the present senior class; Lela in the ninth grade and Marvin in the seventh grade of the Union schools. Five brothers: Frank, Monroe, Cliff, Clayton and Everette; and a sister, Mrs. Eli Shultz and a large number of other relatives also survive him. Funeral Services have not yet been definitely arranged, but will probably be held at the home Thursday afternoon in charge of the local Odd Fellow Lodge. Burial will be in the Miller Cemetery.

Avonelle Rash on the death of Daniel Rash: "They put a general ring on the line to let people know. Dan's wife took the kids back to Kansas. She was from Kansas." General ring: "Party lines" once were common among rural exchanges, where numerous subscribers shared a common telephone wire, and knew when a call was for them according to the number of times the phone rang. A "general ring" used a special number of rings to let subscribers know when a general message was being sent out.

Based on what Avonelle said above, I had sort of assumed Alice and the kids moved fairly swiftly to Kansas, but the following story establishes it was June 1923, two and a half years after Dan's death:
Hardin County Ledger, page 3, Aug 2 1923, Eldora Iowa:
"The Ralph Sawin family attended a surprise party on Mrs. Alice Rash at the Clayton Rash home Sunday. Mrs. Rash and family will leave June the 1st for Kansas to make their home."
